writing class 011_400x600Like anything that is important, I have to say there is no way I could have done it by myself. And, that includes setting up this website. Special thanks for Kim Sinclair for one day deciding I’d been pondering the idea long enough. She just went and did it.

It is now up to Lyle Daniels, who is my other wing, to help me keep this site in order.

Lyle is my husband. We met quite by chance at the start of the year 2012. Our first date was on Valentine’s Day – February 14, 2012. We were then married on December 12, 2012 at 12:12 pm. Magic numbers, (incidentally, December 12th is also Lyle’s birthday). I have no idea how I survived all those years without him. I never married until meeting Lyle. I call him my other wing because with him, I am now able to fly.

For as long as I can remember, I longed to live as an artist. However, as a young lady, I was discouraged with people constantly feeding me a story of woe, saying words like, “Don’t be so silly. No one ever makes it as an artist. You will starve. Be reasonable.”

I have no idea why an adult would discourage a young person’s dream. But, I listened back then (I graduated from high school in 1981) and as a Part B to my career plans, I went into journalism. For more than 30 years, I worked in media, primarily at the CBC. At first, it fascinated me. Eventually though, it became clear that I was no longer destined to just tell other people’s stories. I have my own stories, which are important. Being an artist allows me that freedom to express.

In the coming days, weeks, months, years – I will update this blog, sharing with you things that are important to me or simply bring me a great deal of joy. Other than my husband, the people who I live with are my three beautiful children; Jackson, Nahanni and Danny. We also live with a silly Border Collie and a Torquoise coloured cat (I think that’s how to describe a cat who has a bit of each colour on her soft fur – black, grey, orange, white). I love my life. I love my husband. I love my children. I love my pets. But there is so much to love; bold strokes of colour, music & lyrics & poetry, the telling of stories, being quiet with a good read, laughter, swimming, skating, cooking. I love Creator, my Aboriginal heritage and culture, those spirits who guide me, and being in the presence of people who are truly happy. I love people who plant things, watch it grow and then rejoice in the harvest – that includes ideas.

Having said that, for this first entry, I will add a few photos. Lately, I have been having some mobility issues due to an injury with my leg. So I haven’t been exercising a lot and that means, to keep busy, I have been cooking up a storm. My family thinks it’s great and I totally love watching them eat the food that I have prepared. My main ingredient is love. So here are a few photos from cooking (experiments and tried & true recipes). By the way, I do not generally watch a lot of television – with one exception. Each Tuesday evening, I look forward to the television show called CHOPPED on the Food Network. It is the one show my husband and I never miss. The new recipes, which I have been inventing lately, are my home version of CHOPPED. So far, Lyle says, “You always make it to the dessert round.” I think my husband is amazing. He makes me laugh, he supports my creative artistic endeavours, and he always bails me out when I am exasperated (like trying to figure out computer programs). Becoming Mrs. Lyle Daniels is the best thing I ever did. God Bless.
